What a difference a week makes, unity, encouragement, pace, the will to win every tackle and get to every free ball first.
Right from the start we were at St Paul’s, they were not give a second on the ball. Our passing was good, movement off the ball superb. The pace up front scaring the St Paul’s defence into mistakes. Scott Walsh ran down every lost cause into territory gains. Mick McParland’s strength and pace on the right and with Bradley Russell, starting for the 1st time since his welcome return, St Paul’s struggled to cope.
A fine ball into space on the right was neatly collected by Mick Mc Parland and the shear power and pace of his run left there defence in his wake. His look of determination meant only one thing, the ball was ending up in the back of the net.
1-0 to “The Groove” and a well deserved lead.
Five minutes later Garry Lloyd was called on to make a fine point blank save, other than that our defence, fielding thee centre halves was in total control.
Half Time 1-0
St Paul’s were never going to roll over and accept the score line. The second half saw a determined opposition. More and more they attacked, giving our defence a tough time. St Paul’s finding the back of our net early on, disallowed for offside.
A careless freekick 15mins into the half saw a whipped in free kick deflected into his own net by the unlucky Joel Speight. Rather than heads drop, they cry from all was to respond well and we did almost immediately, Calvin fired a fast cross in from the left, headed into his own net by a St Paul’s defender ???, under pressure from Joel Speight. 2-1, lead restored.
The last period of the game was end to end, we should have had a clear penalty, even St Pauls players looked surprised when the Ref waved play on. Chances game and went at both ends. But in time added on, another careless freekick on the edge of the box was whipped in and a St Pauls striker getting in first to evened up the scores.
What a shame for the boy’s, they looked so dejected walking off the park. Don’t be, your response to the Rozel game was superb, the football played, the commitment, passion, but above all team unity was great to see.
